Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the walking tour of Chester’s Ancient Walls take?
The tour lasts 1 hour 45 minutes (approximately).
For private bookings, I am very happy to explore extended tour lengths - please do get in touch for a chat.
How many people will be on the tour?
Tours groups will never be bigger than 6-8 people, to make the experience as intimate and enjoyable as possible for you.
What makes the Chester’s Ancient Walls walking tour special?
I offer one of the only local tours to cover the full circuit of Chester’s walls, so you get to experience the full beauty of this unique Scheduled Ancient Monument. And, as a local with a passion for heritage, I know the city walls and their stories inside out.
Best of all, the small nature of the group size (6-8 people maximum) also means you get to avoid the throngs of people you’ll often find on other, overcrowded guided tours in the city.
Where does the tour start?
The Chester’s Ancient Walls Tour starts a stone’s throw from the city’s Northgate. We meet beside the wooden bench just next to 2 Upper Northgate Street, Chester, CH1 4EE (What Three Words location: ///ears.churn.focus). I will be holding a sign, so you can’t miss me!
The tour finishes close to the start point.
How much does the tour cost?
Standard tickets for the Chester’s Ancient Walls Tour are £16.50 each. Young people Under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult.
Private bookings for 1-8 people during my standard availability are fixed at £132. This amount may vary for custom private bookings at alternative dates/times.
How do I book my tour tickets?
Tour tickets can be pre-booked via the tour booking page.
Private bookings can also be booked via the booking page or, to discuss an alternative time/date, you can get in touch with me.
Can I book the tour privately for myself or a group?
Yes, absolutely. Private tours for up to 8 people can be made via the booking page. To arrange an alternative private tour time/date that is more convenient to your group, just get in touch via the Contact Form.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Tours typically run regardless of weather, so be sure to dress accordingly! In the rare instance where weather conditions pose a safety risk, we may need to cancel or reschedule – see our Terms & Conditions page, to find out more.
Can I bring my children on the tour?
Older children who are comfortable walking the 2-mile circuit of the walls are very welcome on the tour. Anyone under 16 years old will just need to be accompanied by an adult.
Pushchairs sadly can’t be accommodated on this tour of the walls, since there are various sets of fairly steep steps along the way.
I can’t walk far and/or I use a wheelchair. Is the tour suitable for me?
I am sorry to say that the tour is not currently suitable for those with restricted mobility. This is because various sections of the city walls are not consistently accessible, and the urban layout restricts practicalities for a street-level route. I know this news will be disappointing, and I am working hard to explore ways of making the tour more physically inclusive in the future.
Can I bring my dog on the tour?
Assistance dogs are very welcome on the tour. Other animals, however, are sadly not permitted.
Are tours available at other times?
Private tours can be booked at an alternative time to better suit you. To discuss a time that’s more convenient, just get in touch via the Contact Form.
